FISHER CUP AND CUCKSEY SHIELD TOURNAMENT HELD ON SUN 1 MAY 2022
PRESS RELEASE RE FISHER CUP AND CUCKSEY SHIELD 2 May 2022
The enduring popularity of tennis in East Auckland was well displayed last Sunday with teams from 6 local tennis clubs competing in their annual local derby. Bucklands Beach, Cockle Bay, Howick, Koru, Pakuranga and Sunnyhills Tennis Clubs participated, each hosting a section of the event. Following a rotation each year, it was Howick Club responsible this time for being the primary organiser and who ably hosted the prizegiving.
With both an Open grade competition for the Fisher Cup and a restricted one for the Cucksey Shield, the event covers a wide range of playing level. And with each trophy requiring a team of 6 men and 6 women to represent their Club, over 100 players were out in force, delighted with the fine weather and great competition.
Continuing a run of strong results in the Fisher Cup, Bucklands Beach TC once again secured it, while Pakuranga’s team won the Cucksey Shield. But the real winner of the day was the sport of tennis.
Through the last 2 years of Covid restrictions, tennis has been widely recognised as a safe sport to play and it’s been possible for members to play at local clubs, with suitable safeguards, even in Level 3. Getting out into the fresh air and playing with friends or family from the same bubble and later playing with other Club members has been a godsend for many, providing mental and physical exercise and a change of scene. Competitive tennis leagues were able to resume well before many team sports could. And being a sport that can be played from Primary School age through to your 70s, even 80s, adds to its family-wide appeal.
A very big thank you to all who helped make this day a great success. A special mention to our Cub Sponsor The Stihl Howick for giving us a bbq hamper to add to our very huge premium raffle ( 2 draws were run) – 1st Draw Lois Green who won the raffle basket and the BBq hamper and for the 2nd draw winner – Zac White – Congratulations to you both! The raffle alone fundraised $810!
Also a big thank you to Club Captain John Mills for running the show beautifully!

Our team managers (captains’ parent) have had the tricky task of organising teams with sickness, isolations and last minute changes, and have had to put in more time than usual to manage the teams. Thank you to you all.
Under 18, 15, 13 and beginner club champs are being completed in the next 2 weeks. Prize giving is 2 May at 6.30pm. Vaccine passes are no longer required from 4 April 2022 so this is open to everybody.
Congratulations to Aaron for guiding our juniors to such great results. The beginner grade successes are especially pleasing.
